A scarecrow story of 35 plus years
We are guessing Lena is about 35- 40 years old. Jeanette had been looking at an article about scarecrows and casually mentioned it to her husband. A few days later he called here to come to the barn to see what he was constructing with pipes.
Lumpy Lena’s skeleton is made of pipes. She has had various padding over the years from bubble wrap to pillows. Her hair has been a yellow mop, a red wig and black cotton material. Lena’s head is a partially deflated volley ball with a face painted on. She gets a new outfit every few years usually from the local thrift shop. Her two pipe legs fit inside 2 larger pipes in the ground so weather can not tip her over. One year some birds nested in her hat. She stands holding a hoe, beside a garden bed of lavender with garlic planted at the foot of the bed. She doesn’t really scare any birds but will often bring a chuckle to those who see her.
